Milrem Robotics and Pearson Engineering collaboration continues with obstacle moving capability

Following the successful integration of Pearson Engineering’s Light Weight Mine Roller to Milrem Robotics’ Type-X at DSEI 2021, the companies have continued their collaboration with a new integration for Eurosatory.

The two companies have successfully integrated Pearson Engineering’s straight obstacle blade, demonstrating the ability for Type-X to accept multiple types of Front-End Equipment to meet the demanding requirements of the modern battlefield. The blade being exhibited is designed to clear a 5 tonne obstacle and includes advanced pressure release features which ensure any abnormally high loads do not damage the host vehicle.  The obstacle blade has been fitted using the same vehicle integration kit used at DSEI and exemplifies the rapid interchangeability inherent within Pearson Engineering’s design approach.

Business Development Director Mr Richard Beatson explained: “Robotic Combat Vehicles (RCVs) are the subject of much discussion and development, but it is yet to be fully determined how they will be used in an operational environment. Our collaboration highlights the possibilities for RCVs to undertake mobility, counter-mobility and survivability tasks, ensuring their own independent manoeuvre, and potentially supporting other vehicles to achieve their missions in the way that a typical armoured combat engineer vehicle would do”.

The Type-X Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) provides equal or overmatching firepower and tactical usage to a unit with Infantry Fighting vehicles. “Equipping it with Front-End Equipment gives mechanized units another critical capability and removes the need to jeopardise the lives in manned vehicles to perform high risk tasks”. explained Cpt (res) Jüri Pajuste, Director of Defence Research at Milrem Robotics.

The Type-X can be fitted with a cannon up to 50 mm. With a weight of 12 tons and efficient power management the vehicle has superior terrain capabilities. Its height of 2.2 m and a rear engine provide low visual and heat signature. The vehicle is equipped with intelligent functions such as follow-me, waypoint navigation and obstacle detection with Artificial Intelligence being part of the algorithms.

In recent years, Pearson Engineering has turned its attention to the development of products to support manoeuvre for a wider range of vehicles, equipping Main Battle Tanks to move around the battlefield unimpeded and enhancing other vehicles’ abilities to defeat ordnance and other obstacles.

Milrem Robotics is the leader of a consortium awarded 30.6 MEUR from the European Commission’s European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP) to develop a European standardized unmanned ground system (UGS). During the project, titled iMUGS, modular and scalable architecture for hybrid manned-unmanned systems will be developed to standardize a European wide ecosystem.

Pearson Engineering Minefield Breaching

Pearson Engineering Interrogation

Pearson Engineering's interrogation capability includes a nimble, dexterous and accurate arm suitable for investigating ground sign and other suspicious indicators during Counter-IED route proving operations.

Our interrogation capability is rooted in providing additional capability for Counter-IED and Route Proving operations. To supplement physical detection from ground engaging roller systems, our interrogation arm can be used to further understand the nature of threats and to identify where risks may be present outside of the path of the roller.

Pearson Engineering's obstacle and earth moving range includes dedicated and multi-purpose blades which are designed to create and defeat deliberate obstacles and to prepare the ground for tactical operations.

Our obstacle and earth moving products include general purpose and multi-purpose dozer blades, designed specifically to meet the needs of different mission sets. Our blades are designed to be tough, robust and lightweight, enabling a wide range of obstacle and earth moving activities whilst minimising the impact on the vehicle’s mobility.

Pearson Engineering's obstacle marking capability provides armoured vehicles with the capability to mark safe lanes and hazardous areas during mine breaching and clearing missions.

Typically used alongside Pearson Engineering’s Route Opening Mine Plough, Surface Clearance Device or Route Proving rollers, our highly configurable obstacle marking systems support battlefield mobility by quickly and reliably marking safe lanes and the edge of hazardous areas.

Pearson Engineering Excavation

Pearson Engineering's range of excavator manipulator arms provide powerful earth moving capability to combat engineering vehicles. Designed to be fitted with a variety of attachments, our products can be used to move obstacles such as tree abatis as well as to dig and move earth.

Our excavation capability is designed to support combat engineer operations such as digging, demolishing, removing obstacles and filling trenches to support Area Access and Area Denial.

Pearson Engineering Vehicle Integration Kit

Pearson Engineering's products are designed to provide armoured vehicles with the ability to rapidly adapt to their mission, to overcome challenges to mobility and to deny mobility and momentum for others. Our vehicle integration kits provide 'quick connect' capability for vehicles which require exceptional flexibility and our direct fit interfaces provide enhanced manoeuvre support to fighting vehicles.

Our approach is often described as a ‘Swiss Army Knife’ in that host vehicles can be adapted to take on various combat engineering roles, or to overcome challenges to mobility. Integration of our products with the vehicle is made via a Pearson Engineering Direct Fit Interface or Pearson Engineering Quick Connect. The most suitable integration method depends on the mission requirements and vehicle capabilities. Our engineers will work closely with end-users and vehicle manufacturers to define the most appropriate route to minimise the impact on the vehicle and to maximise operational capability. Decisions are often based on hydraulic and electrical availability as well as the required role of the vehicle. Our integration kits are used to fit products that are designed to enhance armoured vehicle agility, tactical flexibility and adaptability. They are designed to be configurable and to deliver ‘freedom of manoeuvre’ to operations.

Pearson Engineering Recovery Capability

Pearson Engineering's recovery capability includes robust and powerful earth anchors and multi-purpose dozer blades designed to hold a vehicle static for winching operations.

Our recovery capability includes a range of dedicated and multi-purpose blades which are primarily designed to support the recovery of other vehicles and for moving of heavy obstacles. A powerful ground-engaging blade sinks into the earth to hold a vehicle static, acting as the force against which the obstacle can be pulled. The same blade can be articulated to provide some obstacle and earth moving capability.
